Numerous reports flooded Twitter, including from the National Post in Toronto, which tweeted about heavy shaking to its building about 30 seconds after similar reports from Ottawa.

This earthquake occurred near the southern edge of the Western Quebec Seismic Zone. Earthquakes within this zone are mostly small. They tend to cluster in a wide area that is slightly elongated northwest-southeast. Historically, earthquakes in the Western Quebec Seismic Zone have caused damage roughly once a decade. Three or four smaller events each year are felt in the region but are generally too small to cause damage. The largest earthquakes known in this part of Canada occurred in 1935 (M6.1), about 250 km (150 miles) to the northwest of todays event, and in 1732 (M6.2), about 150 km (100 miles) to the east. The 1732 earthquake caused significant damage in Montreal.

The USGS says the largest earthquakes known in this part of Canada were a magnitude 6.1 shaker in 1935 about 150 miles northwest of today’s quake, and a magnitude 6.2 in 1732 about 100 miles east.

Earthquakes of the size of todays event are uncommon east of the Rockies, but many have occurred since the arrival of European settlers three centuries ago. In eastern North America and geologically similar regions worldwide, M5.0 to M5.5 earthquakes typically cause light to moderate damage out to a few tens of kilometers (miles) from the epicenter, depending on the number of people and type of buildings near the epicenter. Typically these earthquakes are felt hundreds of kilometers (miles) away. Earthquakes of this size and depth are unlikely to rupture the Earth’s surface, although exceptions are known.

The U.S. Geological Survey says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 has in the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu have been beaten.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning is in force for Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and New Caledonia.

Vanuatu, officially the Republic of Vanuatu, an island state in the South Pacific. The archipelago of volcanic origin, is about 1750 kilometers (1090 miles) east of northern Australia, 500 kilometers (310 miles) northeast of New Caledonia, west and south of the Fiji islands in the Solomon Islands near New Guinea.

See Map of the earthquake on the ground in this USGS website.

Twitter people also report on a tsunami warning as a result.

A tsunami warning was issued for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia after an earthquake of 7.4 magnitude on the Vanuatu Islands

The USGS said the quake shortly after 04.00 local time clock on Friday and was centered 300 miles (485 kilometers) northwest of Port Vila, at a depth of 22 miles (36 kilometers).

The Washington Department of Transportation has inspected the half dozen bridges in eastern King County and found no damage after an earthquake on Tuesday morning near Duvall small.

The quake, initially reported as a 7.6 magnitude, came at 1714 GMT and was told at a depth of 22.4 kilometers, the U.S. Geological Survey-centric.

The quake was 22.4 miles deep and centered 133 miles northwest of Santo in Vanuatu.

“An earthquake of this size has the potential of a devastating tsunami, the coastal region near the epicenter within minutes or hours can generate strike,” the tsunami center, adding that it was still unclear whether a tsunami was generated reality.

Kris Olsen spokeswoman said inspectors looked at the six bridges in the Snoqualmie Valley area. Olsen said the inspectors did not expect falling damage to bridges and the City of Snoqualmie, because the earthquake was small.

The University of Washington, reported the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network recorded a 3.4 magnitude quake at 05:21, about four miles deep between Duvall and Carnation.

According to many a reports on the Earthquake Los Angeles, there actually was a little one beforehand of a bigger one.

More than 1,000 people have already reported to the USGS’s “Do You Feel It?” website that they detected the temblor. Many of those who responded on the website were from Los Angeles and Orange counties.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 in the Los Angeles area this morning around 4:04. Millions of people from southern California was awaken by the quake. See details below of the earthquake by the U.S. Geological Survey.

There are no reports of damage, injuries or power outages linked to the temblor.

“All is calm in the city of Los Angeles,” Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Steve Ruda said.

Nearly an hour after the quake, the California Highway Patrol got reports of a buckled 10-foot stretch of concrete in a center lane of southbound Interstate 5 south of downtown in the Downey area.

CHP Officer Daniel Asleson said later the quake probably didn’t cause the buckling. Damage was reported a day earlier in the lane, which is heavily used by big-rigs.

The Chilean media reported that at least 47 people died in earthquake and president Michelle Bachelet declared a “state of catastrophe” in the country.

The 8.8-magnitude quake, the country’s largest in 25 years, shook the capital Santiago for a minute and half at 3:34am (0634 GMT) today.

A tsunami warning has been extended across the Pacific rim, including most of Central and South America and as far as Australia and Antarctica.

A large earthquake has taken place off the coast of Chile. The quake occurred at 03:34 am local time (06:34 GMT) today. The USGS initially reported a magnitude of 8.3, but that has just been upgraded to 8.8. The earthquake was located off Maule, 325 km SW of the capital Santiago and 115 km NNE of the city of Concepción, with a reported depth of 35 km. The NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (home page) reports that a tsunami warning has been issued for Chile and Peru, and a tsunami watch has been issued for Ecuador, Colombia, Antarctica, Panama and Costa Rica. The BBC reports that the Japan Meteorological Agency ‘has warned of a potential tsunami across the Pacific’ (NOAA tsunami travel time map).

Chile’s steady economic growth has transformed Santiago into one of Latin America’s most modern metropolitan areas, with extensive suburban development, dozens of shopping malls, and impressive high-rise architecture. It is an Alpha World City and has some of Latin America’s most modern transportation infrastructure, such as the growing Santiago Metro (underground train system) and the new Costanera Norte, a toll

The country’s president is asking for calm after declaring a “state of catastrophe” in central Chile following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake.

At least 16 people are dead and that’s expected to go up after the quake collapsed buildings in the capital, Santiago and the city shook for 90 seconds.

Phone and electricity service are cut, making the extent of the damage difficult to determine, though quakes of that size have devastating potential.

CNN reported that Chile was struck by a magnitude 8.8 earthquake that left 6 people dead.

“His residence sustained some damage, but otherwise no one was hurt among them. Electricity is down in his district of the capital city of Santiago,” said Malaya.

The quake’s epicenter was located near the city of Concepcion, 212 miles (341 kilometers) from the capital of Santiago. The quake struck at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. ET).
