Mosi Tatupu died at 54
Mosi Tatupu has died at the age of 54, according to several news reports.
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin said Tatupu, a native of America Samoa who played 13 seasons for the Patriots, died Tuesday.
The cause of death was unknown Tuesday. Tatupu suffered from high-blood pressure and other ailments, the Star-Bulletin said. “He had some health issues,” said Barry Markowitz, a family friend who was told of the death by Tatupu’s ex-wife, Linnea. The Patriots selected Tatupu in the eighth round with the 216th pick of the 1978 NFL Draft. He played for the Patriots from 1978 to 1990, and made the 1986 Pro Bowl as a special teams player. Tatupu was one of the most popular Patriots players of his era, with a cheering section called “Mosi’s Mooses.” His survivors include Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl linebacker Lofa Tatupu, who starred at KP High and was coached by his dad.
Mosi’s son Lofa plays now for the Seattle Seahawks. Tatupu, from America Samoa, is held as one of the best athletes ever from Hawaii, playing 13 NFL season with the Pats, a former star Trojan.
Born in Pago Pago, Mosi Tatupu went to school in Hawaii where he broke a 17 year state record.
