400 barrels of oil gush daily into ocean off Australia
A massive oil leak on the northwest coast of Australia is an “immediate risk” to dozens of marine species, with an unknown amount, possibly, death and collapses on the floor of the Sea Timor, a report has said.
The biologist James Watson was commissioned to conduct a government survey drilling west of the Atlas platform, where at least 400 barrels of oil have spilled into the sea since August 21
We found about 20 dead sea birds and a dead sea snake among 23 species, and said oil seems to be the production of certain toxic species in the area, where they were at risk.
“The presence of dead sea dying birds and snakes suggest that there is an immediate risk to the species that use water that has been affected by the oil spill,” Watson wrote in his report which was released Friday.
“It is possible that species are dying or dead and lying in oil-affected water can not stay afloat for long periods of time, so it is unlikely to find large numbers of dead animals,” he said.
There was a “significant risk” that a change in conditions could push the oil in deeper waters further west and north, where a large number of endangered cetaceans lived, he added.
“Moreover, as the extremes of the seasons … the younger birds will feed the entire region. Therefore, we believe that in the coming months the oil slick – if irresistible – may have an increasing impact of these species, “he said.
Watson said the spill appears to have changed the feeding and reproductive behavior of some animals, and long-term studies are needed to determine how severe was the impact.
“I’m surprised at how little that Australia is concerned about this,” he told The Sydney Morning Herald.
“This is a huge oil slick.
Tower operator based in Thailand Australasia PTTEP failed in his fourth attempt to plug the leak, now entering its 10th week and said it could take months before the operation was a success.
More than 2,000 barrels of oil have been recovered from the ocean surface in cleanup efforts to date.
Environment Minister Peter Garrett said he remained very concerned about the long-term impact and was “certainly very anxious to see this spill was stopped quickly and safely.”
“He said that while recognizing the difficulty of the task at hand, I share the frustration that efforts to achieve this spill was stopped so far not been successful,” he.
“But I am determined that the environmental impacts of this spill are adequately assessed and the long-term monitoring plan I have commissioned will help ensure that happens.”
The World Wildlife Fund warned that he was dying and wildlife “hundreds if not thousands of dolphins, sea birds and snakes, are exposed to toxic oil” After inspecting the spill area, 250 kilometers (155 miles) offshore.
Australasia PTTEP has agreed to pay for environmental monitoring of the area for at least two years.
